Even though Suryakumar Yadav has been an excellent T20I skipper for India till now, but then when he was handed the full time role, after Rohit Sharma retired, many eyebrows were raised. In 20 matches so far as the Team India captain, he has won 16 and lost only 4 till now. Ex-India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has again sparked the debate.
Suryakumar Yadav Over Hardik Pandya
“Honestly, I was shocked that he was elevated to captain because, until that point, Hardik Pandya was the captain-designate,” Bangar said in the latest episode of Deep Point on Star Sports. But then, he made it clear, that Suryakumar Yadav made an excellent transition. “The way he handled that transition shows his great man-management skills. It’s still early days, but he’s the best fit for this young squad after the retirements of Jadeja, Kohli, and Rohit. He further elaborated, why Suryakumar is excellent in what he does. Just for the record, in 81 T20Is, he has scored 2596 runs at an average of 40, including four tons and 21 fifties. His overall strike-rate is also above 167. “The method to this madness is proactiveness. It takes a lot of imagination, courage, and the ability to anticipate where the ball is coming from before it’s even bowled—that’s his hallmark.
Surya Best T20I Skipper for India?
“During the Asia Cup, we analysed how, when bowlers try to adjust their deliveries after Surya gets into position, he still has another option to punish them. That’s his special ability. There are many players who can hit across 360 degrees, but his ability to abandon his plan and react to a delivery is amazing.”
On the other hand, Sanjay Manjrekar also explained why Surya is the best skipper for India in T20Is now. “He has a great temperament. Throughout his career, you can see that after a strong innings, he always has a smile during his interviews. He’s light-hearted. Just like Bumrah for India’s Test captaincy, SKY is by far the best player on this T20I team.”
