MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines, United States, and Japan held a joint patrol within the West Philippine Sea, following the newest aggression of China within the disputed waters.

Manila’s routine maritime exercise Friday concerned the BRP Andres Bonifacio, which was joined by Washington’s reconnaissance plane P-8A Poseidon and  Tokyo’s Murasame-class destroyer JS Samidare, in response to the Indo-Pacific Command (Indopacom).

“This builds upon earlier MCAs (maritime cooperative exercise) and our persevering with operations collectively, which strengthen the interoperability of our protection/armed forces doctrines, techniques, strategies, and procedures,” the Indopacom mentioned in an announcement.

Indopacom famous that such multilateral drills are carried out “in a way that’s in step with worldwide regulation and with due regard to the protection of navigation and the rights and pursuits of different States.”

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the China Coast Guard fired water cannon at Philippine vessels patrolling off the contested Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal.

Beijing’s actions are primarily based on its assertion that it owns virtually your complete South China Sea, together with a lot of the West Philippine Sea.

In 2012, Manila and Beijing had a tense standoff over Panatag Shoal. China took over Panatag Shoal and stays accountable for the lagoon immediately.

The Philippines filed an arbitration case earlier than the Everlasting Courtroom of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands, and challenged China’s sweeping claims over the South China Sea, and in July 2016, the PCA acknowledged that the Philippines has unique rights over the West Philippine Sea and invalidated China’s nine-dash line.
