PCB to make Jason Gillespie all-format head coach if Pakistan’s Australia tour proves profitable

If Pakistan performs effectively in Australia, Jason Gillespie could convey his in depth expertise and training acumen to guide Pakistan’s cricket staff throughout all codecs.

As the Pakistan cricket team competes in Australia, sources within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reveal that Jason Gillespie could be appointed as the national team’s all-format head coach if the tour yields satisfactory results. Currently the head coach for Pakistan’s Test team, Gillespie is temporarily leading the white-ball squad in Australia following Gary Kirsten’s sudden resignation.

Jason Gillespie could become Permanent

Gillespie’s role with the Pakistan white-ball team is initially temporary, yet the PCB may offer him the all-format head coach position if Pakistan’s performance in Australia meets expectations.

“The Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach instead of advertising for new candidates,” an insider from the PCB shared with PTI on Thursday. The Board sees the former Australian pacer as a strong candidate, and officials reportedly hope to secure Gillespie’s commitment to the position at least until April.

Decisive Tour to Australia for Pakistan

Pakistan’s tour schedule in Australia has become crucial for the team’s long-term coaching decisions. After a close two-wicket loss to Australia in the first ODI in Melbourne on November 4, Pakistan is gearing up for two more ODIs in Adelaide and Perth, set to take place on Friday and Sunday. The tour also includes three T20I matches scheduled for November 14, 16, and 18, which will test Pakistan’s resilience and adaptability.

The final decision regarding Gillespie’s appointment is likely to come after the tour, with a second white-ball series in Zimbabwe on the horizon. “Any final call would be made before the team heads to Zimbabwe,” the PCB source added, stressing the importance of Pakistan’s performance in the upcoming games.

Other Candidates in Contention

While Gillespie remains PCB’s preferred choice for the all-format role, sources say that the Board has prepared a shortlist of former Pakistan players as potential backup options, including former Test spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. However, PCB’s intention is clear: “The preference is to have Gillespie as the white-ball head coach as well if he agrees.”

If Pakistan performs well in Australia, Jason Gillespie may bring his extensive experience and coaching acumen to lead Pakistan’s cricket team across all formats—a move PCB believes could bring stability and continuity to the team’s coaching staff in the near future.
