Aakash Chopra reckons India’s T20I vice-captain Axar Patel can be picked as DC’s new captain forward of KL Rahul for IPL 2025
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that Axar Patel could become the new Delhi Capitals captain ahead of IPL 2025. DC are on the look out for a new skipper after having released Rishabh Pant ahead of the mega auction. While they have three options in the form of Axar, KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis to choose from, the chances of India’s T20I vice-captain seem much higher at the moment.

Axar Patel to be DC’s new captain?
In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra said that it could be a close race between Axar, Rahul and du Plessis. He noted that not only has Patel been named India’s T20I vice-captain but has also been given an important role in the Champions Trophy. He pointed out that the team managed to get Rahul for a steal deal, noting that his captaincy credentials weren’t bad either. Chopra reckoned that unless DC did not make an extreme decision, then Axar could be picked over Rahul as the new captain.
“I think it’s going to be a close race. One has been retained, and the other has been bought. So one between the two, or else if they want to think absolutely left-field, then Faf du Plessis, who is not getting old at all. However, I have a feeling that it could be Axar,” he observed.

Axar was DC’s top-most retention, with the team shelling out Rs 16.50 crore to retain the southpaw. Rahul, on the other hand, was released by LSG. He was picked up at the mega auction by the Capitals for just Rs 14 crore. Another steal deal landed by DC was that of du Plessis. The former RCB skipper was bought for just Rs 2 crore.
DC and KKR are the only two IPL teams who are yet to finalize their captains ahead of IPL 2025. The cash-rich league will commence from March 22 onwards.
