MS Dhoni ought to retire from IPL, believes former Indian World Cup winner

Former India pacer and 2007 T20 World Cup hero Joginder Sharma believes the time has come for MS Dhoni to step away from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-armer made this verdict while keeping Dhoni’s fitness level in mind. Although he’s still fast between the wickets, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon has not been the same since his knee surgery.

Dhoni, 43, returned to lead Chennai Super Kings after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out mid-season. But the five-time champions failed to make the playoffs, marking just the third time in their history that they missed out in 16 years.

Speaking to ANI after CSK’s underwhelming IPL 2025 campaign, Joginder said, “Considering Mahi’s fitness level, he should play up (the order) to prove his fitness, but I believe it is time for him to rest.” With his family present at Chepauk last month and his demotion down the batting order, speculation over Dhoni’s retirement has only grown louder.

MS Dhoni still undecided on future

Despite the chatter, Dhoni has maintained that no decision has been made yet. After a win against KKR earlier this month, he said, “After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6-8 months to see if my body can take this pressure. Nothing to decide now.”

CSK insiders reportedly believe Dhoni may continue into IPL 2026, citing “too many loose ends” for the franchise to move on just yet. He remains a massive presence in the dressing room and continues to draw crowds across venues. Despite his contributions taking a toll this season, fans have turned up in huge numbers to lend support to the enigma that is MS Dhoni.

While Dhoni’s reflexes behind the stumps and his finishing abilities still shine in flashes, head coach Stephen Fleming admitted that Dhoni “can’t bat for 10 overs running full stick.” With a recent knee surgery behind him and age catching up, the coming months will be crucial in determining if the IPL has seen the last of its most iconic leader.
