Shami has no plans to retire regardless of long-time teammates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma calling it a day.
Days after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket, rumours were rife about Mohammed Shami also calling it a day from the format. Shami’s inclusion for the India vs England series is doubtful given his patchy form and fitness. However, the veteran is in no mood to retire, squashing those rumours with aplomb on social media.
‘Worst story of the day’ Mohammed Shami slams retirement talk
With Shami retirement rumours in the media, the India pacer took to Instagram to shut them down. Aggresive with ball in hand, Shami used the same vigour to deal with the issue, slamming journalists for ruining future of cricketers with such rumours.
Taking to Instagram, Shami wrote “Very well done, Maharaj. Apna k din bhi gin loo kitna adieu hai. Badme dekh le hamara ap jaise ne satyiyanash kar diya future ka. Kabhi toh bol liya kare. aaj ki sabse khareab story sorry (Well done Maharaj. Count the days left in your job, too. See in the future, you people destroy our future. The worst story today).”
The rumours regarding Mohammed Shami’s retirement come in after long-time teammates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket. Shami himself is under scrutiny having missed significant action following a stellar 2023 World Cup campaign. The 36-year-old did not feature in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and only made his comeback in the Champions Trophy.
Since his return from an Achilles injury, Shami has looked off-colour. He has struggled for form and rhythm. In the IPL 2025, Shami has endured a nightmare season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. That sort of form has prompted selectors to debate Shami’s future in the longest format of the game. As per reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel could be looking beyond Mohammed Shami when naming the squad for the India vs England series.
