Kosei Tanaka WBO Title Protection Canceled After Jonathan Rodriguez Blows Weight

Saturday’s tripleheader is now down to 2 title fights and a makeshift matchup.

Kosei Tanaka will not transfer ahead together with his WBO flyweight title protection versus Mexico’s Jonathan Rodriguez. The event is thru no fault of Tanaka (20-1, 11 knockouts), who made weight for his or her scheduled 12-round bout. Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 KOs) was miserably over the 115-pound restrict, having missed weight by practically seven kilos.

The disparity was deemed unfit for the matchup to proceed in current kind.

Mexico’s Jonathan Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 knockouts) blew his shot on the WBO 115-pound title after he missed weight by greater than six kilos. His bout versus defending titlist Kosei Tanaka (20-1, 11 KOs), scheduled for July 20, was canceled. Photograph credit score: Naoki Fukuda

“The match is cancelled,” revealed Tanaka, The Ring’s No. 4-rated junior bantamweight. “[Rodriguez] was 2.9kg over the restrict and gave up on the re-weigh-in. Bearing in mind the bodily situation of the opponent and the truth that a combat that has been declared invalid will not be factor, the choice to cancel the match has been made.

“Tomorrow I will probably be showing within the ring with a microphone as an alternative of gloves. We apologize for the unlucky information.”

Rodriguez will seemingly face disciplinary motion from the no-nonsense Japanese Boxing Fee (JBC).

The opposite two title fights on the present stay intact.

Junto Nakatani (27-0, 20 knockouts), No. 10 pound-for-pound defends his WBC 118-pound title versus the Philippines’ Vincent Astrolabio (19-4, 14 KOs). Nakatani is The Ring’s No. 1-rated bantamweight; Astrolabio is No. 7 and enters as Nakatani’s necessary challenger.

Riku Kano (22-4-2, 11 KOs) and Anthony Olascuaga (6-1, 4 KOs) meet for the vacant WBO flyweight title.

Tenshin Nasukawa (3-0, 1 KO) meets Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Rodriguez (17-2-1, 7 KOs). A win is predicted to push Nasukawa, a wildly standard former kickboxing star, nearer to a title shot within the infancy of his boxing profession.

All three bouts will air reside on ESPN+, starting at 5:00 a.m. ET/2:00 a.m. PT.
