Karun Nair not picked in Champions Trophy squad due to Rahane & Pujara? Report sheds mild on selectors’ dilemma

A report has make clear the dilemma of the selectors when it got here to together with Karun Nair in Champions Trophy squad and it has a Pujara-Rahane angle to it

Karun Nair failed to find a spot in India’s squad for ICC Champions Trophy despite having a phenomenal run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Vidarbha batter finished the domestic 50-over tournament as the highest run-getter with 779 runs, averaging a mind-boggling 389.50. Despite his heroics, the selectors decided to snub him, once again highlighting the trend of ignoring domestic performers. Now, a report has shed light on why they chose to ignore Nair.

Why was Karun Nair not picked for Champions Trophy?

As per Cricblogger, a BCCI source claimed that Nair was not picked as the selectors thought that it would send a wrong signal to Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Both veterans, who have been out-of-favour of the selectors in the Test side, have been absent from the scheme of things in the longest format of the game. The report claims that some selectors thought that picking Nair would be an encouragement to get Rahane and Pujara back to the Test team.

The fact that the selection process for something as high-profile as the Champions Trophy was delayed because of intense discussions about Nair’s inclusion only further reveals the underlying tension. Some selectors, it seems, think bringing back Nair into the ODIs will be an encouragement for getting Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane into the Test team,” a BCCI source said.

Further, the BCCI source claimed that Karun was reduced to a joke after being snubbed from the squad for Champions Trophy.

In other words, a player like Nair is reduced to a joke. It has no value that he is scoring runs and most importantly he is in good form,” the BCCI source added.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had attempted to explain Nair’s exclusion stating that despite having phenomenal numbers, it was hard for him to find a spot in the side as they could only pick 15 players.

Someone averages 700+, those are special performances. At the moment, finding spot in this team is difficult,” Agarkar had said.
