Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are not in plans. With the India vs England series on the horizon, India’s batting looks fragile. Facing against an England side can be a tough outing, but Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett has shown the way. The opener smashed the fastest century by a Zimbabwean cricketer.
Brian Bennett shows the way, opener smashes fastest ton by Zimbabwe player
While rest of the batting order crumbled, Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett led the charge with a stunning century at Trent Bridge. The right-hander went berserk, taking a leaf out of England’s playbook on Friday. While Zimbabwe managed 210/5 at Tea, Bennett had alone scored 122 off just 112 balls, with a eye catching 24 boundaries.
The 21-year-old now has the fastest century by a Zimbabwe player, reaching three figures in 97 balls. He breaks Sean Williams’ 9-year record, who scored a century off 106 balls against New Zealand in 2016. Bennett is also the youngest opener to score a ton away from home for Zimbabwe. He is also the third-youngest opener in Test history to score a century in English conditions.
For the visiting Indian team, Brian Bennett’s innings is the perfect example on how to brace the English conditions. Like the 21-year-old, India’s batting lacks the experience. However, Bennett backed his game and took the game to Ben Stokes and Co. and reaped rewards.
Yashasvi Jaiswal adopted a similar approach in the India vs England series at home. The young left-hander had a record breaking series, and he will hope to emulate the same starting next month.
