Afghanistan’s new Champions Trophy jersey, impressed by the nation’s historic Jam Minaret.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) introduced the men’s cricket team’s new jersey on Thursday (30th January). This jersey is special because it is inspired by the historic Jam Minaret, an important cultural symbol of Afghanistan. This announcement comes in as Afghanistan is gearing up for their first appearance in the ICC Champions Trophy. The team earned this spot by performing well and finishing in the top eight at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
A proud moment for Afghanistan
After becoming a full-member nation in 2017, Afghanistan’s cricket has reached new heights. Their qualification for the ICC Champions Trophy, an eight-team tournament returning after eight years, is a proud moment for the country. The ACB shared the excitement through their social media, posting a unique video. This video shows Afghanistan’s beautiful mountains and introduces the new jersey. It features the captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, with other team members.
The Jam Minaret: A symbol of heritage
The jersey’s design is inspired by the Jam Minaret, which has stood in Firuzkuh for almost 800 years. Located by the Harirod River, the Minaret is 65 meters tall, showcasing Afghanistan’s rich heritage. The jersey’s design combines Naskh calligraphy with patterns from the Jam Minaret, symbolising unity and national pride. As the Afghan cricket team, also known as AfghanAtalan, prepares to compete, they carry the spirit of their nation and the elegance of the Jam Minaret onto the global stage.
Afghanistan ready to compete in Group B
In the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Afghanistan will compete in Group B, which includes strong teams like Australia, South Africa, and England. Recently, Afghanistan has shown great skill in white-ball cricket. They impressed everyone at the 2023 ODI World Cup by defeating three former champions and almost winning against a fourth. They also reached the T20 World Cup semi-finals. With such achievements, Afghanistan has become a team to watch closely.
