Through the winter, I construct mileage, do hill work, and run brief races (800m-3k) for weekly velocity work.

As we speak is the primary day of your ninth week of mileage.
Heat up properly, 20 minutes of average working, 20 Minute Tempo run (20 seconds per mile tempo slower than present 5k race tempo), 8 x 300m hill repeats, 6 x 150 meter stride-outs, cooldown.
At all times hydrate.
Make plans for spring. Write down your objectives for the season in your iPhone or iPad or on a postcard, and browse them daily. Desires are fulfilled by onerous work!
